Listening Experiment

Description
A two-day stereo-EEG (sEEG) experiment performed on people with epilepsy at the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG), investigating neural processing of lexical semantics during listening tasks. Day 1: the participant listens to up to 15 chapters of the French audiobook Le Petit Prince (read by Xavier Perez) presented sequentially, with rest periods between chapters. Between the two days, an optimisation process is performed on the recorded data of Day 1 to prepare a list of optimised words for each participant. Day 2: the same participant listens to 32–36 short narratives – stories generated by Large Language Models using the list of optimised words from Day 1 – shuffled within 3 counterbalanced groups (1–12, 13–24, 25–32 (or 25–34)), with rest periods every 2 stories. Both sessions use a fixation cross with photodiode synchronisation and serial-port triggers for EEG alignment. Audio is pre-loaded into memory (Day 2 files are normalised to 24 kHz). Default parameters: 2 s inter-trial interval, 30 s baseline fixation periods at the start and end of the experiment.

Neural processing of lexical semantics during naturalistic speech listening, using intracranial EEG (sEEG) to study word-level encoding in continuous speech.
session- ERP components time-locked to word onsets
- Neural encoding of semantic features during continuous speech
- Cross-session comparison of speech processing (naturalistic vs. optimised stimuli)
| Variable | Role | Type | Description | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
stimulus_index | metadata | number | Sequential index of the audio stimulus within the session (0-based). | - |
stimulus_file | independent | string | Audio filename played (e.g. lpp-xavierperez_ch1 for Day 1, 6684_story_1.wav for Day 2). | - |
trigger_code | metadata | number | Serial port trigger byte sent at audio onset for EEG synchronisation (1–255, cycling via stimulus_index mod 254 + 1). | - |
audio_duration | dependent | number | Duration of the audio stimulus as read from the sound file. | s |
iti_duration | metadata | number | Inter-trial interval between audio stimuli (configurable, default 2 s). | s |
baseline_duration | metadata | number | Baseline fixation period at start and end of session (configurable, default 30 s). | s |
